Speaking of Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake, and we were just this morning, the Patient Access Services team pooled their respective carpentry talents to benefit Family Gateway, an Old East Dallas agency that provides housing and services to homeless families.

The access sevices staff built, with their very own hands, a children’s table and two stools for the charity. Continue Reading »

I took a swing by Kindred Spirits Friday evening to take a swig from the beer sampling of brews made by Napa Smith, yup, a brewery in the heart of wine country.

Just as surprising as a brewery located in Napa Valley, the brews also provided a few surprises. Continue Reading »

Beer Tasting on Tap

Napa Valley, long considered the heart of U.S. vintners, also produces beer.

Shelia Sexton and her daughter, 5-year-old Simone, hope to be in the 85th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Not at the parade mind you, in the parade — at least a float of their design.

The mom-daughter team, who live in the Casa Linda area, entered the department store’s Great Elf Adventure contest, operated on Facebook. They followed clues set out on the social network and via Twitter and found one of the official elf dolls hidden in Dallas by the retailer. Continue Reading »

Giraffes fascinated little James Sikes of Lakewood, so much so, according to the Dallas Morning News, his parents nicknamed him “Jamesie the Giraffe.”

The nickname now stands, tall, as a legacy to the boy’s brief life. He passed away July 16 from a brain tumor, but the Sikes family neighbors, community, and cyber-friends made sure the 8-month-old’s memory would be honored. Continue Reading »

Well that was cool.

I saw White Rock Lake and creek yesterday from a completely different perspective — from White Rock Lake and creek.

I’d never been on the water out there until a friend invited me to go paddle boarding. It involves a surfboard and, because, you know, there’s no surf out there, a paddle. Hence the name.

My friend, Gigi Ekstrom of Lakehill Preparatory School, rented the boards from White Rock Paddle Co., and we met about 11 Sunday morning for a one-hour tour.

After about 48 seconds of instructions from Amy — the paddle company co-owner whose last name I didn’t get, and bad journalist, bad — and 15 seconds of anxiety attack, we smoothed onto the water from a point not far from Boy Scout Hill and started easing up White Rock Creek. Continue Reading »

The vote came in last week overwhelmingly in favor of continuing the Sunday funny photo page — 1-0.

Despite the low voter turnout — not unexpected, this is Dallas — the site stats placed last week’s piece among the most viewed, so we lather, rinse, repeat.

Enjoy, and happy Sunday. Continue Reading »

Sometimes things appear too personal to be considered newsworthy even for a little com[cough]munity site.

Now that the familiarity part has cleared away from obstructing my vision, I give you my dear friend and wine blogger, the Dallas Wine Chick.

Her secret identity is Lakewood resident Melanie Ofenloch who, in her day job, works as a public relations executive for a really big agency.

By night, she dons the wine crusader cape and sets forth her views and opinions of the grape.

She’s now in the running for the Most Valuable Blogger Awards 2011 in the Dining and Entertainment category as nominated by CBS Dallas. Continue Reading »

You tell 'em, Ed.

Last Sunday’s collection of humorous — at least in the eye of this beholder — images garnered a respectable number of clicks, so here we go again.

Make your opinion of its continued weekly merit known in the comments section. Keep it going on Sundays or forget about it. Majority rules.

In the meantime, enjoy.   Continue Reading »
