The 13th anniversary of the Festival of Independent Theaters opens this week in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of its venue, the Bath House Cultural Center.

The curtain rises on this year’s installment of FIT with the 8 p.m., July 15 staging of one-man show “Bob Birdnow’s Remarkable Tale of Human Survival and the Transcendence of Self,” from Second Thought Theatre.

Also on Friday night’s playbill: Upstart Productions’ “W.A.S.P.”

The series runs July 15-24 and July 28-Aug. 6.

FIT features nine productions by eight theater companies. The series is intended by the Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs to be a showcase for smaller troupes that lack a permanent stage to showcase their “new or avant-garde works. FIT exists to promote awareness and growth of Dallas area theatre through collaboration, participation, and cultivation,” according to the OCA-Bath House website.

Check the Festival of Independent Theaters online brochure for season pass and individual performance ticket prices, and a rundown of participating production companies and their performances, then play mix-and-match with the series schedule.
