The Dallas Children’s Theater in cooperation with children’s author and illustrator Steven Kellogg stage a slightly different twist on the story of “The Pied Piper of Hamelin.”

The world premiere of “The Pied Piper’s Magic” — which runs June 17-July 17 — tells the story of the story of Peterkin, a a poor but cheerful elf who receives the gift of a mysterious pipe. He rids the town of rats but rather then exacting revenge for the townsfolk refusal to pay he transforms the residents with generosity and love.

“In the world of Steven Kellogg, happiness and love cures all ills,” Robyn Flatt, DCT executive artistic director and director of the play, said in a press release. “Peterkin cleans up the city, but most importantly, heals the people.  It is rare and special to find real life Peterkins in the world, but I know they exist because Steven Kellogg is one of them.”

The show debuts with a preview dress rehearsal, admission is pay-what-you-can, featuring a visit by Kellogg, which takes place at 7:30 p.m., June 16, at the theater. He also will be on hand for the official premiere, 7:30 p.m., June 17, and before the 1:30 p.m., matinee June 18 to autograph books purchased at the theater.

Check the DCT website for curtain times and ticket sales.
