Supporting troops

By Bruce Felps

Neighborhood resident and former barkeep at Winedale Tavern Alex Gaddy recently launched an effort to support U.S. military personnel, particularly those who have East Dallas connections, by rallying civilians to donate cash and goods to send overseas.

His most recent fundraising move resulted in a container placed at Molly Maguire’s to collect coins — Silver for Soldiers, he calls it — used to buy calling cards for the troops.

As Gaddy explained it on his Facebook page:

Molly MaGuire’s of Dallas is the second location to come on board with the “Silver for Soldiers” program. Here’s the scoop folks: Anyone who has enjoyed a meal or pint here, who feels like leaving their loose change behind, may make a donation to this massive ceramic jug. The money will be collected and used to buy calling cards for the General Manager Grant Morgan’s brother, who is serving his country overseas in Afghanistan. Calling cards, care package donations, etc. — whatever the man and his combat group need. Hooah!

Thanks for the nod. 🙂 Lakewood 1st & 10 has a similar jar, and has already gathered a couple of prepaid calling cards. I’m thinking that we need a friendly competition between the two places to really ramp it up. Maybe someone could donate a trophy that could be passed back and forth between the two?
