Laying down her sword

An East Dallas mom last month informed the community — and the state — of her family’s pain inflected by a trusted neighbor who molested the mom’s daughter.

She also urged readers to back a Texas Senate bill — introduced by Sen. John Carona, who represents East Dallas — that would close the loopholes that allowed the molester, a child psychiatrist, to continue to practice as a medical professional while working through trials and plea bargains.

Yesterday, that East Dallas mom gained a little vindication. According to a Dallas Morning News report, “On Tuesday, after emotional testimony from [the psychiatrist]’s victim, now 17, the Senate Health and Human Services Committee passed the bill unanimously and placed it on the chamber’s Local and Consent calendar — where bills with no objection go for automatic passage.”

The mom sent an e-mail message a few minutes ago with the subject line “I can now lay down my sword!”

Even though swords might be sheathed and laid down let’s hope the community remains vigilant.
