Notes from the chamber lunch

By Bruce Felps

Just returned to the office from today’s Greater East Dallas Chamber of Commerce luncheon and thought it appropriate to share a few notes.

Community resident George Tarpley, who chairs the Circle 10 Council of the Boy Scouts of America, took the podium — lectern? — to talk about a food drive that takes place next month. As it applies to East Dallas, members of the White Buffalo District of the Scouts deliver yellow plastic bags leading up to Feb. 12. Area residents are asked to fill said bags with nonperishable food items, which the Scouts will collect the following weekend, Feb. 19. The donated food goes to White Rock Center for Hope, which, in turn, helps feed about 2,000 low-income East Dallas families per month. That, dear readers, is a worthy cause.

Dallas County Commissioner Mike Cantrell, whose District 2 reaches into East and North East Dallas, assembled a staff who I would like to get to know better. Oh yes I would.

FBI Special Agent Robert E. Casey Jr., who delivered the keynote address, said, among other things, the FBI database processes way more than 200,000 sets of fingerprints a day. Wow, that’s a lot of arrests. Speaking of Casey, which we still are, I wonder if he’s related to former CIA chief William Casey.

The chamber has a new, at least interim, executive director in Tina Yampanis. They’ve been rolling through ED’s the last few years like Spinal Tap rolled through drummers — Pete Oppel, Christine McIntyre (I think), Greg Solomon, Claudia Worme, Susan Hello — so let’s hope that position is taken care of for a while.

Finally, if you don’t much care for prime rib you were pretty much out of luck today. I’m not a big fan of prime rib or steak, but I was hungry, OK?
